How Paper Bag Dimensions Are Written

Flat Size vs Expanded Size

Most custom paper bags are delivered and stored flat. In that condition, the side folds and bottom construction are compressed into the bag body. A flat photo can therefore show the width and height clearly while hiding the depth that appears after the gusset and bottom are opened.

Expanded size matters because the product occupies three-dimensional space. A bag can look wide enough when flat but still be difficult to load if the gusset is too shallow, the bottom does not open fully, or the top opening is restricted by reinforcement and handles.

Do not use the outside flat dimensions as an automatic internal-capacity calculation. Paper thickness, folds, seams, top turn-over, bottom structure and the way the product sits inside the bag all affect usable space.

Side Gusset vs Bottom Gusset

A side gusset is the folded depth along the side walls. When the bag opens, those folds expand and create depth for the product. Measure the Packed Product First

The safest starting point is the product in the condition in which it will actually enter the bag. If the product is sold in a retail box, measure the complete retail box rather than the bare product. If apparel is folded, measure the final folded bundle. If several items are carried together, arrange the intended set before recording the outer dimensions.

  1. Choose the carrying orientation. Decide which face will point forward and which dimension becomes the depth.
  2. Measure the widest point. Do not use only nominal product dimensions if lids, caps, folds or decorations project farther.

Top Fold, Handle Position and Usable Height

Finished bag height is not always the same as fully usable product height. Rope and ribbon bags often include a turned top edge, reinforcement board or patch, handle holes and knots. These features occupy part of the upper structure and can reduce the space available to a tall product.

A product that reaches too close to the handle area can interfere with the opening, press against knots or eyelets, or make the bag difficult to carry. The buyer should therefore specify both the intended product height and the top presentation or carrying requirement.

Common Paper Bag Sizing Mistakes

  • Sending three numbers without field names: the factory may read the dimension order differently.

A sample should confirm more than appearance. Use the intended product, packing orientation and normal handling process.
